French term or phrase: pari sur le regard
Hello,

the sentence that comes after it is "De nombreuses cinémathèques ou archives audiovisuelles en région tiennent ce pari.

what I have come up with is not too snappy: "is a challenge and its (amateur film) survival depends on people's outlook" or something similar..

Thank you for your insight!

English translation:bet on the viewership/audience
Explanation:
Because I think they mean a bet that the movie will attract audiences. Viewership of a motion picture can be audience size, although the term may be used more for TV shows.

Found the source text and the subject is "regard" meaning public perceptions or viewpoint or attitude.

Indeed the title of the source text is Un regard a traversé le temps.

neutral  Tony M: I don't really think we'd use the very literal 'bet' in this way in EN; but my bigger concern is whether we can really extrapolate from 'regard' to audience figures?
