French term or phrase: Délivré sur livret de famille
Good morning all,

The stand alone phrase "Délivré sur livret de famille" is on a certificate I am translating and I am just looking for a little clarity on the matter.
I feel issued on family book is a little strange to say so I wonder if this could mean issued alongside family book or family book issued?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

issued (up)on presentation of (the family record book)
Explanation:
I think this makes the most sense here

i.e you must present your livret in order to get this cert issued to you (a requirement to get this in other words)

as for livret de famille, there were long discussions as to how to translate this when I was studying the book of the title by Modiano for my BA in French but we basically decided there is no English equivalent so you might leave it in French https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livret_de_famille_(roman)

agree  AllegroTrans: This makes sense, possibly also obligatory to get the "family book" officially updated; https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F18910

-> Thanks, yes, the livret would have to be updated as well to show the marriage had taken place

agree  Timothy Rake: Presentation of the livret is proof of identity in this case, too.

"Issued on the basis of family record book"/ "Issued on the basis of family certificate"

Explanation:
"Le livret de famille présente des extraits d'actes des membres composant une famille. "

I did a search for several companies that deal with the translation of documents called "livret de famille" and they call this document in English "FAMILY RECORD BOOK".
In Switzerland "livret de famille" has been replaced since 2005 with "certificat de famille", so if it is a nearby region or you definitely want/ need a translation other than "family record book", then I think you could indicate an English translation "family certificate".
So, in my opinion you have 2 options for translating the whole sentence:
- "Issued on the basis of family record book"
- "Issued on the basis of family certificate"

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: we would not say "issued on the basis of" in English so don't see how this is any improvement on my answer

Reference: délivré sur présentation du livret de famille

Reference information:
It's an abbreviation of the above, leaving out "présentation du".

For example:
un certificat d'inscription scolaire. Il est délivré sur présentation du livret de famille (page parents et enfant),

Another example: This is in Paris, but presumably the Algerian authorities have a similar procedure. If you want a copy or excerpt of your marriage certificate you simply have to prove who you are and that you are married by presenting the official issuing the certificate (attestation) with your ID card and family book.

Pour la délivrance d'une copie intégrale ou d'un extrait avec filiation, il vous faut présenter une pièce d'identité et, éventuellement, un document prouvant votre relation avec l'un ou l'une des époux / épouses (livret de famille ou autre acte d'état civil). Pour une demande d'extrait sans filiation, aucun document n'est exigé.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: yes, that's how I read it. Though it obviously depends on what the certificate is?//good link

-> Thanks, I think it simply means that they proved they were married by presenting their "livret de famille" to the official.
