When I explained all of this to my neighbor, who is the head hematopathologist at a major clinic, his reply was that the study of red blood cells falls under hematopathology, and hematocytology was a term he had never heard used. And evidently there has been a vote to reclassify this as Non-Pro. Just so that person knows, I have been working as a translator for almost 15 years and have a master's degree in translation.

Hi Nikki - so the headings are: Biologie medicale / hematologie / hématologie and then there is a table underneath with "nature de l'échantillon: liquides biologiques d'origine humaine" then "Nature de l'examen/analyse: hémogramme (numération-formule-plaquettes, avec cellules anormales et paramétres associés)

"hematocytology" appears to have been used in the 1950s and 1970s, but RARE (most of the mentions I come across are in Russian articles!), and "hematocytes" => hemocytes. Take at look at these tables. I'd say "hematology" - the "cyt-" drops out in the English construction. "Cytology" is not limited to blood cells so I don't see why you'd put "hematology" (which is) + "cytology".

Considering that this is a specialized field and the readers will be specialized in the field too, using “hematocytology” seems the only solution.
Cytology is that branch of life science, which deals with the study of cells in terms of structure, function and chemistry.

In French it definitely is the study of RBC and blood cytology includes more. My last ref is CDC so the word is accepted even if not commonly used.

Hi Drmanu49, yes I found these same references, but it looks like they are translations. Hematocytology is not a word that is commonly used in this field in English. I'm wondering if blood cytology wouldn't work better....
