French term or phrase: l’alternance de zones hélicoïdales et globulaires
Hello,
Can anyone please help me understand the phrase below (surrounded by ***). I have tried to research collagen but am overwhelmed by the scientific terminology and really don't know how to correctly render this in English. All help gratefully received. Thank you ! BTW, this is from a brochure by a cosmetics company - the part of the phrase that's troubling me seems way too technical for the general public, but maybe I am wrong.

In many connective tissues, type VI collagen is bound to the sides of type I fibrils and may bind them together to form thicker collagen fibers (Figure 22-16b). Type VI collagen is unusual in that the molecule consists of relatively short triple-helical regions about 60 nm long separated by globular domains about 40 nm long. Fibrils of pure type VI collagen thus give the impression of beads on a string.

The globular domains of type VI collagen are related to the collagen-binding domains of cartilage matrix protein and von Willebrand factor.

Abstract. The structural identity of certain helical regions of collagen from human and rat skin equals or exceeds that of other homologous proteins. In contrast ...

neutral  philgoddard: Does region mean the same as domain? If so, would it be better to say "an alternation of helical and globular regions"? Just asking!
