This is the complete phrase:

Au Nord de Burg al-Muballat, une petite poterne est fermée par une tourelle plaquée contre la base du parement de la courtine de la citadelle et le tablier rocheux.


I know that 'tablier' sometimes has the connotation of being a 'superstructure' ie a roadway over a bridge or a deck... but I can't quite picture this!!!
