French term or phrase: altérer par les joints cet aspect uni
Hi again!
DOC: 1907 Museum catalog of ancient Egyptian mirrors. Catalog entry.
CONTEXT: 44101. Boîte à miroir. - Bois et ivoire. - (pl. XXIII). [....] TECHNIQUE. [....] Perhaps this is the "steaming" process discussed before!

ATTEMPT: The plating of the box warrants the following observations: the only rectangular panel still in place [+is on one of the exterior sides and] shows that an ivory panel was used for the frieze, which is left undecorated in order that ***this smooth appearance would not be spoiled with any seams***, whereas the pieces for the edging, which is decorated, were added on.
ISSUE: or is it = shows that an ivory panel was used for the undecorated frieze, so as not to spoil its smooth appearance with any seams, whereas the pieces for the decorative edging were added. No, that makes no sense. But something is not quite right with my understanding of this part of the sentence.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions?

so the joins would not to spoil this unified appearance
Explanation:
I think because the other parts were plain, they kept the frieze plain too, so as not to draw undue attention to it.

Do please note, too, that for wood, 'placage' is not 'plating' (that's for metal), but rather 'veneering' — as details are emerging, it would seem that the rounded form of this box has then been veneered with thin sheets of wood (or ivory) veneer, of course easier to bend.
