French term or phrase: à vrai dire à des fins d’analyse différentes

...it has different analitical purposes?

Thank you

English translation:admittedly for different analytical purposes
Explanation:
I get the impression this is the sense of 'à vrai dire' here; and I think for once 'différent' is indeed 'different', since I'm assuming the writer is contrasting modern analysis with the outmoded 'ethni-folk' school of thinking.

I.e. even fakes can have academic value, albeit working from a different agenda.

Explanation:
Hello,

That's how I read it.

There seems to be a punctuation problem:

I hope this helps.

Perhaps no comma was intended, but you often do see "à vrai dire" set off by commas.

I can't believe my understanding is that far off here.

neutral  Tony M: I don't actually think there's mising punctuation, I think the whole point is that the 'à vrai dire' applies specifically to the 'fins différentes'

-> Usually you see commas setting it off, so I can't really agree with you. Have a nice day.
