French term or phrase: Engagements reçus : cautions bancaires
Title of a section in the table of contents of a statutory auditor's report for a French company.

Engagements reçus : cautions bancaires.

It doesn't help that the corresponding section in the report just says:
"Cautions bancaires :

It's the "reçus" that is throwing me a bit. Given the context, should "engagements reçus" be read as "Commitments/liabilities undertaken", or perhaps "guarantees furnished"?
Unless "reçu" is being used in the "notarial" sense of "drawn up, executed"?

Contingent assets (amounts contingently receivable under) : bank bonds & guarantees
Explanation:
as opposed to engagements donnés: (contingent) liabilites outstanding/ amounts payable under bank guarantees. So no to "reçu" being used in the "notarial" sense of "drawn up, executed".

I remember, as an inhouse translator and interpreter at a translation office in London, having this barney with a City firm of investment brokers & accountancy clients all of 40 years ago - and these had been the translations such clients had suggested.

Thank you. This makes sense now, in contrast to "engagements donnés"; the link provided by Daryo was also a great help.

liabilities received: refundable deposits

Explanation:
The deposits are liablities. Because they were refunded, they become liabilities received.

The term refundable deposits refers to cash collected from credit customers that a company expects to return after a specified period of time, or when certain conditions are satisfied. When companies collect this money, the intention is to return it after a relatively brief period of time.

disagree  Daryo: "une cautions bancaire" is no money at all - it's only a "promise" to possibly pay some money in future in some specific circumstances IF THEY OCCUR // where from do you get "deposits" ???
