French term or phrase: Alvéoles
Hi,

I am working on a translation about the soil testing, among other things.

I am struggling with the transltion of the term "alvéoles" in the following sentence: des actions de caractérisation sur site des sédiments des différentes alvéoles du site.

I know that alvéole can mean cel, or a part of the lungs (longblaasjes), or refer to a honeycomb pattern, but neither of is suitable in this context. In this segment specifically they are talking about the testing of groundwater.

thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Explanation:
That's one of the meanings I find in the French-Dutch dictionary, "inham"which would mean inlet or cove in English... so that could have to do something with groundwater or soil testing, although we don't have too much context to work with here..

Les alvéoles sont totalement étanches pour éviter toute pollution des eaux souterraines grâce à 2 types de sécurité (active et passive). L’étanchéité du fond et des parois des alvéoles est obtenue par des matériaux naturels, selon les normes d’imperméabilité très stricts. Elle est renforcée par une géomembrane et un géotextile de protection.

yes, I just checked if I could find any connection between alvéoles and eaux souterraines (groundwater) on Google, but I am no expert at all, I think if you look a bit further in that direction you'll find a good term for it. Good luck, Ilse! :)

or maybe you can also have a look at Linguee here: especially "storage cavities" in English (for example).

Hier wordt alvéoles vertaald in "cel" (3-talig document).... afkomstig van een ecologische website rootbarrier.nl dus het zou wel eens "opslagcellen" (storage cells) kunnen zijn

Notes to answerer
Asker: No inham won't work...(and sorry for the lack of context but due to an NDA I cannot publish a lot more). It really concerns monsters taken at different places at a test site, so I am thinking small "drilling points" or sth like that.

Asker: Hi Philippe, yes that seems to go in the right direction. Thanks. I was thinking maybe "holtes" could work.

Asker: Thanks, I have sent my question to OVAM as well (they do not respond to enquiries by phone) but their response time is slow, the automatic reply says "within ten days". I have to submit tomorrow ;)
