Finnish term

kleedaus

Finnish to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Kleedaus and derivatives of kleedaus:

Kleedausrulla ja -puu
Purjelaivoissa ne osat vaijereista päällystettiin eli kleedattiin joihin jouduttiin tarttumaan käsin, sillä paljas vaijeri repi kädet verille. Kleedauspuuta pyöritettiin vaijerin ympäri samalla kun vaijerin päälle syötettiin kleedausrullasta tervattua narua eli määrlinkiä.

serving

When finishing a splice, the process of winding waxed linen thread around the splice is called 'serving'. I wonder if it might fit in your context as well? At least this link seems to suggest so: http://www.charlescderokoinc.com/writing/index.htm
Peer comment(s):

agree Timo Lehtilä : Seems to be correct and hopefully also understandable by English speaking seamen.

cladding

I can't find an example of cable being clad in wood, but this would seem to make sense in the context. "Jacketing" might be better unless it's needed to describe an additional layer that goes over the cladding.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Timo Lehtilä : According to the Finnish text the wire isn't claded with wood but with a rope
