Funny, I recognize it immediately it from the Dutch word "randvoorwarde," whose constituent parts means reuna and ehdot, literally.

Proviso may be fine, however, the reuna part seems then to be squeezed ou. Ehto in itself is a proviso, condition, and the like.

Actually, German has the same word, i.e., Randbedingung. It is probably a "loaner" in that sense.
Prelimiting condition, prior condition are other options.

Actually, got more curious about this. Klausuuli is proviso, stipulation in Finnish, as it is in the other Nordic languages, German, and Dutch, in its various gestalts.

Asker: Yes, but I think the 'squeezing out' is valid, as Finnish is often more tautologous than English anyway
