Persian (Farsi) term or phrase: اورنگ‌زیب
Hi,

This is something that has intrigued me for months now. اورنگ is an old word for throne, isn't it? Pronounced "owrang" i.e. with long O, perhaps? I wonder if it has any connection with the word for colour (رنگ). Of course, the Hindustani pronuciation is somewhat different.

But what really fascinates me is the second part of the name, زیب. It's so similar to زیبا (beautiful) that there must be a connection; however, at least in the dictionaries I use, I find no trace of the word.

So, "Beauty of the throne", perhaps? Or maybe "Ornament of the throne"? "Jewel of the throne"?

Many thanks,

Simon

زیب is a noun and means "beauty / ornament" and "زیبا" is its adjective which means "beautiful / ornamented"
It costs to say that "زیب" as a noun is not used in modern Persian and "زیبایی" is used instead.
Old Persian: الماس را از برای زیب در تاج نهاده اند
Modern Persian: الماس را برای زیبایی روی تاج قرار داده اند/نهاده اند

زیب غزل کردم این سه بیت ملک را, تا غزلم صدر هر مراسله باشد
This is a بیت /beyt/ (distich) of a Persian poem in which the poet has used three distiches of another poet whose name is ملک )ملک الشعرا) and says that he has used them to BEAUTIFY his poem.
The translation of the first part is:
I have made these three distiches of Malek as the beauty of my ode.
Here, "زیب" means "beauty" as mentioned before.

A phrase that I found now, is "تن زیب" which is a Persian clothes brand.
It means "body beautifier"
We say that "اورنگ زیب" also means "throne beautifier"
