English term or phrase: work through the concepts
Hi,
I’m not sure about the meaning of “work through the concepts” in the following passage taken from a workbook for parents. This workbook contains exercises and activities for parents and their kids; some of these activities require the parent to reflect on his/her parenting strategies and to write down their answers to a series of questions.

So, I was wondering whether “work through” in this case refers to simply reading and thinking through the concepts of the book before joining the group activity or whether it might mean that the reader should also apply the concepts (e.g. doing the exercises of the book) before joining the group led by a clinician or educator?

You're welcome. Yes, obviously they will be better able to apply the concepts once they are better understood ( after discussion and Q&A) but I think they should try them out in advance.

Asker: Thank you, Gallagy! Actually, that was also my first hypothesis...but then I thought that for some parents it might be difficult to do the activities on their own right from the start... Maybe I could say "trying" to put these concepts", just as you said, so it will feel less challenging, maybe... Your help is always very valuable!
