English term or phrase: in Comp
"Morrison... glanced at the temp headline Dees had slugged at the top
of his penguin story. Libby Grannit in Comp would come up with a punchier, more colorful one, of course — that was, after all, her job — but Dees's instincts were good all the way up to headlines, and he usually found the right street, if not often the actual address and apartment number. ALIEN INTELLIGENCE AT NORTH POLE, this one read." (Stephen King. Night Flier. from ‘Nightmares & Dreamscapes’)

What is ‘Comp’? Composition Department? But it isn’t a compositor’s job to think of better headlines, is it?

Selected answer:could be Composition Dept.
Explanation:
Well, you are correct in that headlines are usually the editor's job. However, is this a small newspaper in the story? If so, Libby's MAIN job may be composition (or she might be doing it just at this time), but she may wear two hats because the paper is small and she has to do two (or more) jobs that may or may not be related.

Just a thought.
