English term or phrase: prancing poetry
There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of "prancing poetry" :
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears the human soul

Selected answer:means...
Explanation:
People often say that poetry means whatever you think it means or whatever associations the reader has with the words.

However, Dickinson, like most poets chose her words carefully and is playing with words here that describing various ways READING can transport you to "lands away"
here a frigate,
a courser (=a knight's horse, then described as a "prancing" or high-stepping pony)
+ chariot

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/prancing
"When a horse prances, it takes small, quick steps and raises its legs higher than usual."

and the poem's metric system also gives the sound of the pony...See here:

iambic meter. This poem has the rhythmic, da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM feeling of an iambic meter. An "iamb," a popular kind of metrical "foot" (or unit) is made up of two syllables, one unstressed (da), and the other stressed (DUM). It might help to think of the clever reference to "prancing Poetry" in line 4, and imagine a horse briskly trotting along to get a feel for this meter. "

so think of the journey on this prancing pony your mind can take when reading. Prancing is a happy image

oops, I just realised I have a typo above. I wrote prancing "pony" instead of "poetry"
so yes, the "courser" is a knight's horse but reading a page of "prancing poetry" is even better than riding this horse as your imagination can travel even further...

neutral  philgoddard: That's just one person's opinion! Personally I think it means joyful, but that's my opinion. Prancing is what a horse does.
2 hrs

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: prancing usually means happy/gay...not really about highs and lows/hot and cold/laugh and cry
5 hrs

neutral  Ali Sharifi: You both could be correct. Jumping up and down is a sign of cheerfulness as prancing of a horse could convey the same meaning.

what does prancing poetry mean?
جست و خیز کنان

Explanation:
که بالا و پایین می رود،

هیچ ناوچه ای چون کتاب نیست
که ما را به سر زمین های دور برد
و هیچ سوار کاری چون صفحه ای
از شعر جست و خیز کنان نیست
این سفر را هر چند فقیران
بدون سختی و مشقت روند
چه بی ارزش است ارابه ای
که روح انسان را می برد

Courser
به معنی سوار کار یا شوالیه قرون وسطی است که اسب او جست و خیز می کند همانطور که لحن شعر بالا و پایین می رود

what does prancing poetry mean?
a play on "metric foot"

Explanation:
Referring to stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry.
To me it doesn't mean a type of poetry .. just: not even an elite horse would prance like a page of poetry.

what does prancing poetry mean?
prancing poetry

Explanation:
he might be refering to how the stress in the syllables of a poem may seem to go up and down, or alluding to perhaps the image of one who reckons themselves a gret poet and very pompously prances about as he recites his work, or reads it to to others in order to show off. (think pink cheeks, white wig, fancy shakespearean clothes, make up on, cup of tea in one hand, book in the other, while skipping around the garden and reading... if that all makes any sense to you:P
