A Japanese professor translate his abstract. And send me the Japanese and English and ask to check it and check his abstract together with an American who understand the Japanese. The American said "anxiety" may be better than "nervousness." So I asked about it here. Sorry to trouble you.

You don't need to give English natives definitions as (most of us anyway) already know the difference/nuances of meaning between words and how appropriate they are in the context. But I don't understand what your role is here? If the source text has been translated by "a Japanese professor" and edited by an English native? Did the Japanese professor translate this as "nervousness" and the American agree with that when editing? I think you need to post this as Japanese to English, with more context, to see what translation is offered of the ST. You have the full context. We don't. So impossible to say for sure what is "most appropriate"

Nervousness is related to real things you have to deal with: you feel nervous about speaking in front of the board of directors, or awaiting lab test results after the doctor saw “something” on your X-ray. I've told her a couple of times in the past that it would make more sense to post her many questions under Japanese to English, but she doesn't reply.

We don't know what the Japanese says, so there's no point guessing.

I agree with Sheila. You can't guess at what is meant here. As she says the terms nervousness, anxiety, stress etc. are different and are not exact synonyms at all. So impossible to tell what is meant here exactly or why the respondents chose this word. Or is this a translation where the translator has chosen the wrong word? I'm also curious about the "inferiority complex," mentioned.

If you had the source, and you knew it had been translated inaccurately, you could change it. But you don't know what the author meant, so IMO it would be dangerous and irresponsible to change it to anything other than a more commonly used synonym. Nervousness, anxiety, stress -- they are all different. Nervousness does seem unlikely to me, but I'd only flag it for the attention of someone who has the source text to hand. I wouldn't presume to be a mind-reader.

I assume this was translated from Japanese. I think "Anxiety" is certainly preferable to "Nervousness", but I also wonder, depending on the source text, whether "Stress" would be more accurate.
