This is a squareness test on some components of a machining center.

Mount an indicator on the table and then touch off the taper in the spindle adapter.
...
Make sure the cylinder is on the center of the table by mounting an indicator on the ram and touching off the side of the cylinder near the bottom then rotating the table.

The indicator looks something like this:

The table is the usual table of machining centers (in this case, it is a vertical turning center).

How do you interpret "touch off" in this case?
