English translation: Further explanation

English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Medical - Medical: Instruments / Knee joint prosthesis
English term or phrase: fixed vs. modular stem design
Could you please explain me what the difference between fixed and modular stem design is?

I am even not sure if read it correctly:
design with fixed stem and design with modular stem ???
I do not understand what fixed and modular mean in this context.

It is very difficult to translate technical texts without seeing illustrations and/or having proper assistance of the manufacturer.

CONETXT

Femoral Components: The femoral components are designed in right and left configurations and are available in standard and posterior stabilized designs. The standard component is available with or without an intramedullary stem. The posterior stabilized component, which provides supplemental intrinsic prosthetic constraint, is available in a primary design without a stem, as well as in fixed and modular intramedullary stem designs. Femoral components are available with nitrogen ion surface treatment.

Explanation:
Modular design generally indicates a system of interchangeable parts or components (in this case a stem).
Whereas fixed design usually indicates components which are matched specifically to each other and may not be interchangeable.

Explanation:
A "modular" stem should be a prosthetic stem which can be adapted to the joint, equipped with components to modify its lenght and width. A modular stem is independent by the upper part of the prosthesis to be more adaptable to the patient joint.
