Chief Prosecutor, General Prosecutor, Attorney General, that doesn\'t matter. It\'s definitely different than your ordinary, run-of-the-mill public prosecutor in any case.

neutral  JeffFish (X): your sources seem to confirm my suspicion of rank
2 mins
-> think you're right on closer look - would be the equivalent of an attorney general most likely

neutral  juvera: If you count Japan, Italy, the UN etc. into the above category. It is more of a question of translation. Right, if you hold back on judgement, we could be friends. :-) The atlas gone. (Funny, I just broke my arm, hence the grumpiness.) Thanks.

-> thanks for the geography lesson but did you not note the words "in particular"?? - have already thrown my weight behind Jeff's answer in the meantime anyway - is the title not the office//friends anyday, just put the atlas away.:-)// get well soon!

In which country?

Explanation:
I assume by now you know that when you post a question like this, no one can provide you with adequate help without proper context. In this case, the context needed most is location. Job titles can have different meanings in different countries, and the same job can have different titles in different countries.

With respect to the United States, I rely on Black's Law Dictionary. If the terms you posted pertain to a different country, please post an added note.

I will first assume that you know what a prosecutor is and does. If so, then you know that the primary meaning of "prosecutor" refers to a public officer who represents the government (state or federal) in criminal proceedings. In the sense, whenever the word "prosecutor" is used without a modifier or an indication otherwise, we can safely assume "public prosecutor" is meant. "Private" prosecutor is a relatively rarely used expression referring to a private party that initiates and carries out legal action, especially in criminal cases.

In most states, the public prosecutor is called "District Attorney," or D.A. The office of the D.A. employes many attorneys, who are called "prosecutors," but who actually do more than that, since they also represent the state as defense attorneys when legal action is filed against the state.

The expression "United States Attorney" is used as a title for any attorney that represents the federal government either in a prosecutorial capacity or in a defense capacity in a civil or criminal case.

In the US, the expression "general prosecutor" does not have much currency, although the term "attorney general" is commonly used for a very specific meaning. The attorney general for any state is the state's chief legal officer, who, through a well-staffed department, advises and represents the government in litigation, either as porsecotor or in a defense capacity.

At the federal level, the Attorney General is a member of the president's cabinet and the head of the Department of Justice.
