I'd say there's a subtle difference - paying implies you are paying for something (goods or services rendered), while "depositing" is more "bland", it simply means to put the money onto an account.

neutral  Charlie Bavington: don't really think your distinction is valid - HSBC calls the bits of paper you fill in to deposit money into your account "paying in slips". No implication that you are actually being 'paid' for anything there....:-)
