English term or phrase: middle childhood

Dear colleagues, I was wondering whether “middle childhood” might mean "school-age children" in the context below (the preceding sentence refers to “preschool peers", so I thought "school-age" might be right here)
. According to some texts, middle childhood is the age between 6 and 12, but there doesn’t seem to be complete agreement… The text below is American English.
