English term or phrase: how post is delivered in the US
"Since our apartment was on the third floor, I had been unable to make satisfactory arrangements to have the Sunday Post home-delivered. We had tried various methods, but I never found the paper half the time".

It's Street Lawyer by John Grisham, Chapter 10.

I'm just wondering to what happend to Mike's newspaper so that he didn't get it half the time. Was it stolen from his mailbox on the groundfloor? But was it not locked then?

How does the post delivery system in the U.S. work?

Selected answer:Dropped out front
Explanation:
Newspapers are delivered - usually by young people in their first job - by being dropped outside the address. If raining, it will be covered in plastic. It is based on good faith and the trust system; and because they are delivered 5 - 6 AM, the assumption is that thieving types aren't up and won't disturb the paper.

agree  Tina Vonhof (X): 'Expert' paperboys often throw the papers on the front step all the way from the street or sidewalk, so they don't have to get off their bike. //I agree that 100% confidence is too high: even in the US or Canada, practices may not be the same everywhere.

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: 100%? No, that's for houses (as can be seen in movies). This is an apartment on the 3rd floor.

agree  Karen Wooddissee: I lived in a 4th floor apartment in New Jersey and had the New York Times delivered on weekends. This is exactly what they did (left it on front step). It wouldn't have fitted in our mailbox anyway..
