De-velop or devel-op

Never splitting words at all in justified text, particularly with narrow columns, is not really an option in typesetting, but it must be done sparingly. English is much less tolerant of word division than Spanish, for example.

I have a little Collins word-division dictionary which I bought years ago when I was an editor. It's been very useful. On this question it says what I would have said: the only place you can split "develop" is "de-/velop". Tony's right: the reason why you can't (or shouldn't) split it *"devel-/op" is because if you do you're left with two characters on the next line. But "devel-/oper", "devel-/oped" and "devel-/opment" are all OK (as is "develop-/ment", of course).

I would only hyphenate it thus: de/velop (as Julia suggests from her Harraps) — I wouldn't hyphenate before the /op, leaving just 2 letters on the next line.
To my way of thinking, deve/lop would NOT be correct in EN (though note it would be in FR!)
As a matter of typography, we are generally taught never to hyphenate in such a way as to leave less then 3 characters on the next line.

I don't think this belongs here; it is not a terminology question, and the hyphenation does not have anything to do with the source language, but either is correct. Most dictionaries will mark splits for you, e.g. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/develop

My "Harrap's" suggests: de/velop, de/vel/oper, de/vel/op/ment. Of course, that is if you must split at all.
