Anheuser-Busch just stood by the shore and watched the boat called globalisation disappear on the horizon. It may have had something to do with the St. Louis frame of mind.

Anheuser-Busch was located in St. Louis, so far so good. But I am clueless about what a St. Louis frame of mind is. Lindbergh's plane was also called the Spirit of St. Louis, but I cannot see any connection. Something to do with the fact that the Southern US states are said to be slow and peaceful? Americans, to the fore.

This is obviously subjective and in this case, one would need to read the entire text, but I'd suppose that people in St. Louis felt secure that globalization wouldn't threaten their core industry or industries.

The observation that the boat of globalization "disappeared on the horizon" is ambiguous. A Wiki on the St. Louis economy states that "St. Louis (has) the 21st highest GMP in the United States" and a diversified economy. Healthcare is currently one of its largest industries. Anheuser_Busch is now part of a Belgian-Brazilian multinational beverage and brewing company headquartered in Leuven, Belgium. "It is the world's largest brewer with nearly 25 percent global market share and the third largest fast-moving consumer goods company by firm value (as of March 2012)."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anheuser-Busch_InBev
So I'd say that while the city hasn't been hurt by globalization in this case (the company still has very profitable operations in the US), it isn't leading in the globalization game of power, which for this company has shifted to Brussels. This may be due to a certain level of complacency or resignation. The US is a big market and many US companies don't look beyond their own borders.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: yep, way I read it too. So insular (and complacent)they "let the boat sail over the horizon" and did nothing to stop it...so globalisation taking business away

-> thanks gallagy2! I was thinking about insularity versus globalisation :) Obviously, complacency comes into the equation too

neutral  writeaway: but your refs only focus on insularity. not sure such an interpretation is correct. imo this is too specific unless someone really knows what they mean. Not sure that just surfing the web will do it in this case.

-> Indeed, it was specifically a comparison of "insularity" versus "globalisation", which seemed to show a pretty convincing result! And I was also looking for something a little snappy, and which was not simply a paraphrase of the header term.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, that I know but how do people in St. Louis think. Is this something only an American can know?

Asker: Thanks, I know that, too. It's indeed sarcastic. But this still does not give me any idea HOW they think or what the expression may stand for. Slow frame of mind? Complacent frame of mind?

Asker: so you think it is complacent?

Explanation:
With its French past and waves of Catholic immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries, from Ireland, Germany and Italy, St. Louis is a major center of Roman Catholicism in the United States. St. Louis boasts the largest Ethical Culture Society in the United States. Several places of worship in the city also are noteworthy, such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, home of the world's largest mosaic installation.
