Should clarify - bangers UK = sausages US but we also use sausages, it's just the US doesn't use bangers.

Bratwurst Sausage (US variety)

Explanation:
Originally German based, but there are a type of brats that developed in the US that seem to resemble this. See reference link.

neutral  Joshua Wolfe: What you say is true, but I have never an American use the term 'banger' except to be droll or when quoting a Brit

-> Correct Joshua, this was more on reference to the sausage type. We don't use the word 'bangers' in reference to this in the US

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: bangers may be exclusively UKI, but sausages is not exclusively US. In fact, in Ireland we only really used the word bangers when referring to "bangers and mash", otherwise always sausages.

-> Sorry - I didn't mean sausages is exclusively US - I call them both too. It's just bangers is only used in the UKI as far as I know.

agree  Tony M: I think the point is that they're known as sausages everywhere, but the colloquial 'banger' is only British, and then only in certain expressions, as Cilian has pointed out
