Selected answer:Informational is used in DIY repairs
Explanation:
Information is normally just a message, or the providing of general information.

Informational messages also contains information as to how to fix something as well as the general information and dwells deeper into the subject.
An example is in "Do it Yourself" DIY repairs, where there is not just the information about the product but how to assemble it and maintain it.
In this case the informational message would have point by point instructions firstly about the error and then how to repair the error.

Generally an information message will just list the error and then offer no additional information. like a pop up error message on your PC. where as the help section is more informational.

I post informational videos on Youtube for my customers to explain to them how to do a repair. They are full of technical advice, informational.

At least, as far as I am concerned.

To me, messages convey information, so to say "information(al) messages" is something of a pleonasm, and as suggested above, one should use "One Or The Other", but not both...

agree  Ken Cox: judging by the ghits, the camps are fairly evenly divided between 'information' and 'informational', with respectable names in both. Choose one or the other and move on.

Explanation:
I prefer 'information'. 'Informational' sounds very strange to me, although there seem to be quite a few Ghits for it.

Asker: yes, there are more ghits for informational than information (+ "error messages). Informational messages seems more correct to me, because it stresses the purpose, "information messages" seems more informal and with a non-defined purpose.
