Selected answer:"careful analisis of the key financial indicators"
Explanation:
Now, I'd say there's a comma missing there. It probabably should read:
"sound, fundamental and quantitative research is the key to securities investing", which of course means that when you're investing in securities you'd better know what you're doing and check out the companies' business and financial records... hence, make a "sound and fundamental" research, that is to say, a careful research, something professional, obeying to strict, almost scientific criteria.

It should be said, however, that many financial analysts tend to make a certain confusion between *fundamental* and *fundamentals*, the fundamentals of an economy or company being the most important economic and/or financial indicators, such as growth, inflation, public debt, the price of money (in macroeconomics) and profitability, efficiency and sales growth (in microeconomics).

The confusion those analysts make is that they use both words interchangebly... which strictly speaking is incorrect. So, when the person who wrote the article mentioned the "fundamental research" that should be done, what he or she had in mind probably was that those financial indicators I mentioned should be carefully checked. Of course that this is pretty much what I've just said above, so all things considered, the answer is pretty much the same:
"sound and fundamental" research = careful research, something professional, obeying to strict, almost scientific criteria, or if you prefer, and in the context you gave me, a "careful analysis of the key financial indicators"
