I am translating a paper on a biomedical polymer to be used as scaffold in the human body. The author wants the paper to be published in an international scientific journal, so I have to be right about the specific technical terminology used.

"Many researchers are currently looking at ways to tissue-engineer bone [ref], and much of the research has focused around choosing the biological phase to encourage the cells to produce new tissue. There are two main approaches: (i) to use a bone mineral phase that **supplies biological cues**, but also possesses a mechanical strength similar to bone [ref], and (ii) to use of a “natural” polymer scaffold in which cells can easily survive and proliferate and that can better mimic the environment during bone formation [ref]. Calcium phosphate (CaP), a bioceramic, is a popular compound used as the bone mineral phase. It is well known for its osteoconductive properties [ref], and has a high affinity for proteins and peptides [ref]. "

I asked the author what she meant by "biological cue" and she answered:

"It refers to the fact that a material can be used as a scaffold (a support for a new bone tissue, for example), provided that it complies with certain biological characteristics so that the bone cells have affinity for the material."

¿Can you tell me if "biological cue" is the appropriate term in this case? There are not that many references for teh whole expression in this context. Either this term or the verb seem to be incorrect.
