In given context, i.e. "the best chicken sexers hail from Japan," the proper translation seems to be ,"one who determines the gender of chicks" since this is true of the actual profession according to Wikipedia at least. If this term is used in context of criminal investigations then I would suggest to use the transliteration of the term and in brackets add "one working with intuition", or simply not use the term and just give the suggested meaning. It's not a common expression outside of the poultry profession. The only discussion I found easily accessible was in the Comments section of this page: http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-original,92835/
Thanks a lot for your intelligent views on this interesting subject. I greatly value them and would love to gain more knowledge from you on this but I'm afraid, these are off topic and the fellows might not like it, so I stop here.
Abu Riaz Sahib, Intuition, borne out of experience, undoubtedly plays an important role in guiding logical analysis in all kinds of problem-solving activities including criminal investigation. Perhaps the clearest example is seen in the game of chess. In any given position, there are so many potential sequences of moves to be analysed that an exhaustive analysis is beyond human capabilities. A good player uses intuition to calculate only the most profitable move sequences.
I would make a distinction between intuition and ESP. The former is borne out of experience whereas ESP is a mysterious process which somehow allows one to divine the right answer. As far as I am aware, all properly designed and executed scientific investigations of paranormal phenomena such as ESP have failed to find anything of significance.
Your addition is quite informative and appreciable, Ojha Sb. Another thing, the element of 'intuitional' qualities of the person carrying out the process of 'chicken sexing' is given much importance. Do you think this type of 'ESP' also has some role in the subject being discussed (finding the clue)?
I suppose a criminal investigator would know how to classify clues, just as a chicken sexer would know how to classify hatchlings. There must be detectives who specialise in this. There used to be a TV program in the UK where details of unsolved crimes were broadcast with appeals to the public for help. Inevitably, the police got a truckload of leads and had the task of 'chicken sexing' so that they could concentrate on the most promising leads.
By the way, my Hindi/Urdu suggestion is quite tentative. I feel it must be possible to put it more elegantly.
In the poultry industry, a chicken sexer determines the sex of newborn chicks so that valuable females can be separated from males and fed appropriately to maximise egg production. In criminal investigations, the term may mean someone who sifts the leads and selects those which are most likely to advance the investigation: "surag chhantne wala".
