Попередниця лінолеуму - церата або «промаслене полотно», винахід якої був офіційно зареєстрований в 1627 році. Більш ніж через 100 років вона знайшла своє вживання і як підлоговий матеріал. У патенті Натана Сміта від 1763 року покриття описане вельми детально: «.на тканині знаходиться маса, що покриває її, з суміші смоли, живиці, іспанського коричневого фарбника, бджолиного воску і льняного масла, яка наноситься в гарячому стані».
