English term or phrase: false dichotomy

Greetings,

A false dichotomy is what arises when someone mistakenly believes that one must choose between A and B when actually it is possible to have them both.

For instance, in the opinion of republicans, it is impossible to combine monarchy and democracy. Most modern monarchists, however, would say that this is a false dichotomy as monarchies like the UK, Norway, Sweden and Denmark are amongst the most democratic countries in the world.

Of course, I do not wish to give an opinion here on these matters; I am merely referring to these arguments to illustrate what “false dichotomy” means.

False dilemma

The informal fallacy of false dilemma—also known as false choice, ***false dichotomy***, falsified dilemma, fallacy of the excluded middle, black and white thinking, false correlative, either/or fallacy, and bifurcation—involves a situation in which two alternative statements are held to be the only possible options, when in reality there exist one or more other options which have not been considered.

False is not used to mean "sahte" (fake). It exactly means "yanlış, hatalı" (to denote that the person thinking black and white is mistaken).

Explanation:
I'd use 'sahte' because the 'false' here is not as in false vs. true, but as in false vs. real.

"Sahte ikilik" could also be used, in fact better in a non-academic context. I would use dikotomi only in a philosophical text - it wouldn't be widely understood beyond that context.
