Geçim ücreti Explanation: "Making work pay" is a social policy popularized by Bill Clinton. It seeks to improve the living conditions of low-wage workers. It was his campaign slogan that working full-time would and should get people out of welfare systems: full-time workers would not be poor! Yet, there is not an established definition for the term, and different countries adopt diffrent measures to increase empoyment and improve the living conditions of the poor: tax credits for low income earners, life wages, increasing minimum wages through taxes for employers, subsidies, childcare & housing supports, self-sufficiency & skill-building programs, incentives to work, etc. It is difficult to find an equivalent term in Turkish social welfare system although there are some concepts in Turkish welfare system addressing to this issue such as "asgari geçim indirimi" (a kind of "earned income tax credit"), "asgari ücret" (wage floor, or minimum wage), and other social benefits. Conceptually, my best proposal for the "making work pay" is "geçim ücreti sağlamak" ("geçim ücreti" can be backtranslated as "living wage"). |
