På engelska kallas genren ”whodunit” (”vem har gjort det”), och det är just mordgåtan som står i centrum. Mordet ska gärna ha skett på en avskild plats där bara ett begränsat antal personer kan ha befunnit sig samtidigt – dessa utgör de misstänkta. Författaren placerar ut ledtrådar (och villospår) som läsaren ska kunna använda för att lista ut vem som är mördaren. Men berättelsen tar ofta oväntade vändningar och överraskar läsaren.
