English term or phrase: local national
NAFTA also liberates foreign investment rules, which may provide you with additional opportunities to conduct business in new markets. NAFTA requires that each country treat investors from each other country at least as favorably as it treats its own domestic investors. In practice, this means that the NAFTA countries promise not to subject investors from another NAFTA country to different or more strenuous rules than they impose on their own domestic investors. For example, NAFTA forbids a country from imposing a requirement that a certain minimum level of equity in an investment be owned by a local national. Similarly, no NAFTA country can require that certain senior management positions be reserved for local citizens only. These “most-favored-nation” rules provide the basic guarantees of the NAFTA countries: an investor from another NAFTA nation will be treated the same as a domestic investor
