agree  María T. Vargas: Lo primero, y en todos los país que participaron en las dos guerras mundiales hay estos monumentos que no son simplemente hitos o monumentos sino que están dedicados a los caídos, como la propia frase lo dice. También lo he visto "a los caídos".

Explanation:
Creo que lo pondría así ya que lo abarca todo. He vivido en Australia dos veces y pienso que 'war memorial' en este contexto se podría estar refiriendo a los museos, ya que de hecho es así, cada ciudad los tiene y, para ocasiones que lo ameriten, también se constituyen en un 'memorial' donde se depositan ofrendas florales, se hacen saludos protocolares, etc,. El mejor ejemplo es el War Memorial de Canberra, la capital (por cierto, interesantísimo).
Lo de 'landmarks' lo dejaría como 'lugares muy conocidos' en un sentido figurado o también me gusto el 'punto de referencia' de Robert, Suerte:)
