In deciding whether to lend money to developing businesses, banks will typically look to the business’s credit history, cash flow, economic conditions, capital, and collateral owned that might be used to secure a loan.
Venture capitalists are typically private venture capital firms. In exchange for their investment in a developing business or company, venture capitalists typically receive an equity interest in the company in the form of preferred stock, a seat on the board of directors, and a continuing role in company management. Preferred stock refers to stock that has a higher status than common stock as to dividends, distribution of assets, and rights associated with ownership.
A developing business trying to seek financing in the form of venture capital should realize that very few companies actually receive venture capital from private firms.
