Доброго времени суток.

During the winter, the golf club organized a bowling league every Sunday morning, **with each player betting with the other using a bowling handicap system**. As a young boy I always accompanied my father to the bowling alley on Sundays to watch and root for my dad. To borrow the Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam’s image, in those days there was no one in my St. Louis Park community “bowling alone.”

Система применяется, чтобы неопытные игроки могли играть на равных с более продвинутыми. В словарях еще есть "гандикап", но я не знаю, насколько это употребительно. Видела еще вариант "игра с форой".

Explanation:
"Handicap system" это система уравнивания шансов. Мне как-то пришлось переводить текст о гольфе, и там это было. Система применяется, чтобы неопытные игроки могли играть на равных с более продвинутыми. В словарях еще есть "гандикап", но я не знаю, насколько это употребительно. Видела еще вариант "игра с форой".
