The phase encode shadow of an object in an image is the area of the image that is swept out by translating the object along the phase encode direction. Ghosts of an object can only fall in its phase encode shadow. Since the background ROIs are placed along the four edges of the field-of-view, two will be in the phantom’s phase encode shadow and two will not. Two of the background ROIs will sample the ghost signal and two will be free of ghost signal. It is necessary to have the two ghost-free background ROIs to serve as a control on the mean background intensity, which can be affected by several factors, most, notably noise.
