Conventional wisdom holds that challenging one's audience via personal style is counterproductive to the role. I've always gravitated toward a more androgynous personal style, a more fluid sexuality.

Explanation:
Насколько я понял проблема не в смысле, а в правильном выражении. Мне кажется, что сами эти теории (андрогинии и подвижности половой ориентации) западные, а потому у нас просто еще нет для них терминов. Проще всего перевести "в лоб".

Судя по всему это не медицинский текст - неточность (если она есть) в терминах трагедии не сделает.
