On-Site Sanitation Systems
A number of on-site or hybrid sanitation facilities are in operation in each target towns, such as septic tanks/cess pits and local domestic sewerage using drain fields. These local systems are typically utilised in areas which are not covered by the conventional (water-borne) sewerage systems. Not all sites are suitable for septic tank and on-site soakaways since the soil conditions encountered in the target towns have low porosity and are not suitable for ‘drain away’ of the septic tank effluent, consequently the overflow may be discharged to a nearby drainage system. The sludge, collected and accumulated in the septic tanks or cess-pits, should regularly be removed and disposed of in a safe and controlled manner, however there are no septic tank sludge treatment and disposal facilities. The septic sludge collected is usually disposed at municipal waste collection points or at existing WWTP.
