Безопасная среда исполнения (Trusted Execution Environment, TEE) характеризуется защищенностью, контролем целостности и наличием собственной оперативной памяти и пространства хранения. Она изолирована от обычной «функционально богатой среды исполнения» (Rich Execution Environment, REE), в которой работают операционная система и приложения мобильного устройства. Пользуясь возможностями TEE, разработчики могли бы создавать приложения и сервисы REE, которые остаются защищенными даже при компрометации операционной системы — рискованные операции изолированы от REE, а конфиденциальные данные (например, криптографические ключи) никогда не покидают TEE.

Developers have defined the main OS on an loT device or an application server as the “Rich OS” (e.g., Windows and Android). The TEE is a lean OS-like environment that resides aside the Rich OS (this is also known as the Rich Execution Environment [REE]). It is designed to extend the level of protection against attacks that may have been generated in the Rich OS (e.g., from malware), for example, by taking control of access rights. TEE assumes that nothing coming from the Rich OS is trustworthy. TEE domiciles sensitive applications that are best isolated from the Rich OS, and it maintains all cybersecurity credentials and data manipulation in the lean TEE rather than in a larger Rich OS.
