luna in crestere/descrestere Explanation: crescent - waxing sau waning = semiluna nu poti sa specifici daca e in crestere sau descrestere daca contextul nu precizeaza la fel cu gibbous (lune gibbeuse FR) poate fi waxing sau waning vezi link: http://www.carpecaelum.com/wangbbs.htm http://www.carpecaelum.com/waxgbbs.htm din ce mi-aduc aminte luna are 4 faze: luna noua, luna in crestere, luna plina si luna in descrestere eu as folosi amandoua daca contextul nu zice ce face ( creste sau...) |

lună "cocoşată" Explanation: I'm loth to believe there's no termen consacrat, but I've been scouring Romanian sites and the few that do talk about the phases of the Moon shy annoyingly away from mentioning crescent/gibbous - which seemed odd to me, because I don't think I've seen a single English astronomy book that doesn't mention them along with the other phases. I don't really like the solutions for this term proposed in the link I quoted for the "crescent" question. I can see the logic of "semilună în creştere/decreştere/scădere" for "crescent moon" since that suggests less than half of it is illuminated, but I'm not keen on their idea of "lună în creştere/scădere" for "gibbous moon" because as you know, on their own those mean "waxing/waning moon", and of course we have waxing crescent, waning crescent, waxing gibbous and waning gibbous. "Crescent" certainly doesn't mean "growing" in this context, it just refers to the sickle shape. Since "gibbous" literally means something like "humped" (from the Latin "gibbus"), maybe you could calque it? It wouldn't be the first time - in fact I think it might be the second, if that's of any reassurance :-D Perhaps you could add ghilimele to indicate this isn't a standard usage. And in case you're wondering who wrote it, the credit is due to Irina Mocanu and Ana Axan... of Clasa a 9-a A (with the sterling guidance of their profesor îndrumător, Cristian Maga). Doesn't that just fill you with confidence :) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2007-01-02 00:13:23 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Îmi cer scuze, am uitat că poate trebuie să faci o distincţie între "waxing/waning gibbous moon." În acest caz, dacă trebuie neapărat s-o faci, ce zici de "lună "cocoşată" în creştere/scădere"?! Cred că mai bine mă culc... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2007-01-02 02:14:05 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- And of course, I may be wrong about Irina and Ana writing that piece - I had been reading it on a different page which gave their names at the bottom, http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:O12jV60_XwsJ:www.lefo.r... but maybe they lifted it from the other site! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 15 hrs (2007-01-02 11:56:35 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- There also seem to be one or two sites where it is called "lună convexă", which probably sounds a little more scientific. "Daca forma lunii este de secera (in forma literei C) - luna este in descrestere, iar cand este in forma convexa (in forma literei D) - luna este in crestere? Litera descrie exact invers faza lunii - D - in Crestere, C - in Descrestere." http://www.acvaria.com/despre_luna.htm -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day13 hrs (2007-01-03 10:30:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- During the gibbous phase, only one half of the moon appears convex with respect to the other so I don't think "biconvex" would be accurate. "If the half-ellipse is convex with respect to the half-circle, then the shape will be gibbous (bulging outwards), whereas if the half-ellipse is concave with respect to the half-circle, then the shape will be a crescent." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_phase |
