E é isso que nos permite regressar à alegoria e ao seu privilégio em relação ao símbolo. A alegoria constitui um princípio de fractura em relação ao símbolo que se rege por um princípio de unidade. Se no símbolo se mostra a unidade, na alegoria mostram-se as ruínas da História, num movimento de reenvio constante no qual é preciso reconhecer uma dimensão de imperceptibilidade ou de não acabamento, o que implica uma ideia de movimento, de reenvio que não sabemos, a priori, onde termina. É isto que, no fundo, distingue a alegoria barroca da alegoria medieval de que Benjamin se demarca.
