Anywhere where there are cracks and corners, the light kind of misses those areas, it bounces around it, so it creates a darkened effect and gives you a nice effect.
This is happening real time, the shading environment is all live on the GPU.
This is not faked into the world, this is actually being rendered by the video card live.

Explanation:
A ideia me parece ser mais ou menos a seguinte: algumas técnicas de geração de imagens primeiro criam uma imagem de base e depois vão adicionando alguns elementos por sobreposição. Só que, nesse processo, muitas vezes a coisa fica meio artificial, forjada - fica óbvio que as imagens adicionadas posteriormente não pertencem àquele cenário.

No seu caso, é tudo criado junto, em tempo real, então essa situação não ocorreria.

Mas essa foi a interpretação que eu fiz, ok? Qualquer coisa alguém me corrija.


Na referência abaixo tem um trecho com a mesma expressão, só que fazendo referência a fotografias.
