Trata-se de uma parte do texto em que aborda o processo de melhoramento de variedades de sementes:

These types of experiments are conducted in situations very similar to those of the farmer, and often in the farmer’s ﬁeld.

The main types of on-farm trials include strip trials and *mother-baby trials*. Strip trials evaluate three to eight varieties in un-replicated 6- to 8-row plots across a farmer’s ﬁeld. The *mother-baby trial* design consists of two types of experiments, viz., a researcher-managed ‘mother trial’ and farmer-managed ‘baby trials’. The mother and baby trials are located on farmers’ ﬁelds.

The maize varieties are therefore evaluated under ‘real’ farmer conditions and they create opportunities for communication and interaction between all stakeholders, represented by the farmers, breeders, extension staﬀ and seed companies.

Também vi várias referencias a "Ensaio de Variedade" mas não consegui ter a certeza absoluta da equivalência destas duas designações.

Não sei se a palvra "enxerto" existe em PTPT, mas no Brasil é comum o uso dela, significando "plantar" internamente em um tronco ou galho uma outra espécie de fruto para obter nova variedade.
