Czasem termin ten obejmuje obszary, gdzie nie tyle nie ma dostępu w przestrzennym sensie, ale także mieszkańcy nie mają potrzeby takich produktów kupować – dotyczy on wtedy nie tyle infrastruktury, co zwyczajów żywieniowych (stąd tłumaczenie żywieniowa pustynia wydaje się lepsze).
