دو روانشناس به نام های بریکمن و کمپبل، برای اولین بار در 1971 در نشریه مقاله ای منتشر کردند با عنوان”نسبیت شادمانی و طراحی جامعه متعادل“. در دهه 70 این مفهوم به عادی شدن شادمانی معروف بود. هنوز 20 سال از آن تاریخ نگذشته بود که عادی شدن شادمانی را به به مثالی مدرن تر و قابل فهم تر تشبیه کرده و مفهوم تردمیل شادمانی به وجود آمد.

سازگاری سریع با افزایش دست‌مزد، به این معناست که این روش، فقط زمانی مؤثّر است که مرتّب انجام شود که در آن صورت، بسیار هزینه‌بر است.۱ به این حالت در نظریه‌های شادکامی و لذّت‌های مثبت، «سازگاری لذّت‌گرایانه»۲ یا «تردمیل لذّت‌گرایی»۳ می‌گویند. برخلاف آن که این عوامله شرایطی بسیار پُر سر و صدا دارند و بخش عمده‌ای از توجّه مردم و رسانه‌ها را به خود جلب می‌کنند، تنها حدود ده درصد شادکامی را تبیین می‌کنند.
