I actually found out this word thanks to you, Ed (Plaisance), but unfortunately I’ve lost the document I wrote it on.

The word I am looking for describes a channel running down the middle of a relatively narrow street for water (if I remember rightly). Ed told me it certainly wasn’t what I erroneously thought it to be at first, an open sewer (please excuse my ignorance).

I actually saw a photo of an Iranian street containing the above-mentioned channel courtesy of Ed.

agree  Edward Plaisance Jr: This is what I had explained to Simon...I believe I had also explained the colloquial pronunciation as "jub". In the photo it looked like the jub was in the middle of the street...actually jubs are along the edge.
