The preservatives used to pressure-treat wood are classified as pesticides. How lumber is pressure treated After small cuts are made in the lumber, it is pushed into a treating cylinder. A vacuum extracts the moisture from the wood, as well as any air in the cylinder, so there is room to pump in the liquid preservative. The high pressure in the cylinder forces the liquid into the first centimetre of the wood. The wood is then removed and allowed to dry naturally.
