| japanese slang for "Tough Female" Yarite babaa（やり手婆）Onna Chiimaa （女チーマー）Onnna Gyangu(女ギャング）Babaa（ババァ） Explanation: I believe that “Babaa” is the synonym of “bitch.” “Yarite Babaa” is a traditional way to describe a tough woman. Original meaning is “the madam of a brothel” but it’s been used disparagingly behind her back, often times in a work environment, when a female takes strong leadership. “Suke ban” was replaced with “Onna Chiimaa” (a female Teamer) and now “Onna Gyanngu” (a female gangster). No body uses “Suke Ban” anymore except some association with the movie “Suke Ban Deka(2006),” which is a remake of 1980s hit TV shows/Films. You may still use “Onna Yankee,” but it is also a bit out of date expression. “Otenba” means more like just a “tomboy” for athletic young girls and doesn’t have nuance of “tough female.” -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 days (2006-10-08 14:56:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Hi Mavericker. Ofukuro gyaru: Never heard of it. Oyaji gyaru (Oyaji gal), Obatarian: Still used. Obasan, Obahan(=Kansai dialect of Obasan) : These don’t necessarily mean “tough women.” These are synonyms for “aunt”, “aunty” or “a woman in her middle age” in general. But, in Japan, where people worships young girls, calling somebody who is not your aunt as “obasan” could suggest very much derogatory/insulting nuance. (“Oba-chan” could be more affectionate) “Ofukuro Gyaru” must be created (and didn’t live so long) in the comparison with “Oyaji Gyaru.” A “Oyaji Gyaru” is a young woman who acts like “Oyaji” (= dad, or a man in his middle age who doesn’t care for trendiness or fashion). “Ofukuro” means “mom.” So, “Ofukuro Gyaru” must be a young woman who acts like a “Ofukuro” Ko-gyaru/Ko-gal : a fashion-consciuos teenage girl who often alters her school uniform into ultra miniskirt and wears loose high-socks. These girls are strongly influenced by a pop star, Namie Amuro and imitated Amuro's fashion, make-up, and her tanned skin. So, there is no exact synonym for “Ko-gyaru” because they don’t exist outside of Japan. I would say “Generation Y” could be a close call, but not really correct, I think. I am not quite sure what exactly you meant by “tough.” But if you are looking for terms for b-word, “Ko-gyaru/Ko-gal”, “Oyaji Gyaru” “Ofukuro Gyaru” are not really the correct ones. “Obatarian” is a bit faded, but it is still used in many occasions.
